The VA Disability Compensation Process
Veterans Administration (VA) Disability Compensation is a monthly payment from the government that reimburses veterans for injuries or medical illnesses sustained while serving on active duty in the United States Armed Forces. This monthly compensation is also tax exempt. To qualify, the injury or illness must have been service related.
The VA Disability Compensation Process is as follows:

- VA Disability Benefits Application Review – A Regional VA Disability Representative will review your application for completeness and make a determination as to whether or not you need to provide additional information or evidence to substantiate your qualification.
- VA Disability Benefits Evidence – The Regional VA Disability Representative then reviews your application and the supporting evidence provided with your application. At this stage, the VA Disability Representative will review all of the information and evidence submitted with your VA Disability claim. It is at this time the VA Disability Representative could request that you submit additional evidence. The VA Disability Representative may also submit your application for review by a medical professional or another government agency to determine if you qualify for benefits.
- VA Disability Benefits Decision – The Regional VA Disability Representative makes a ruling that either approves your application to receive VA Disability Compensation or denies your application.
- VA Disability Benefits Notification – A letter from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs will be mailed to you stating the decision to approve or deny your application for VA Disability Compensation.
- VA Disability Benefits Appeal – If you have been denied VA Disability Compensation, you have two options. You may either appeal the decision or accept the decision and move on with your life.
